A “life changing” experience
Principal Rich Peters.
“Root 2 Rise has been an amazing experience. I’m beyond grateful for it,” said Rich Peters, principal of the Marshall School District’s Early Learning Center.
This is the school’s third year with Root 2 Rise, and Tutor-Mentors (20 this year) are now in all classrooms (4K through fourth grade).
Some teachers were initially “a little apprehensive” about having high school students in their classroom, but those doubts have vanished.
“Teachers are now begging” to participate, Peters said. He never harbored any doubts about the program, because, like several Tutor-Mentors, he became interested in teaching after helping younger students while in high school.
Peters taught for seven years and has been a principal for a decade.
“If it were up to me, I would have several Tutor-Mentors in every classroom. They are extra hands, extra voices, extra leaders,” he said.
Several Tutor-Mentors have been hired as assistants with the school’s summer school program.
“It’s been such a positive experience. Parents thank me for allowing this to happen.
“I’m an eternal optimist. If I believe in someone, I know they will rise up to meet expectations. Root 2 Rise proves this. It’s life-changing.
“It’s been a great opportunity for everyone involved.”
